Notes for ESL teachers and students:
This is a shortened and simplified version of some of the information in Canada’s citizenship study guide (intended to introduce this topic to beginner ESL students).
Students who are eligible to write the citizenship test should consult the Government of Canada’s full official guide, Discover Canada: The rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Please check Discover Canada for any content changes made since this webpage was created.
Additional note to teachers:
Information in this section is part of the Canadian citizenship guide. Your students who eventually write the citizenship will need to know these and other facts about World War I.
Just a note of caution … Some of your students may have experienced war personally. Unless you know that your students are comfortable with the topic of war, I would suggest discretion in teaching this lesson and in keeping the reflection questions to the historical topic of World War I (rather than asking them to share their personal experiences).
